Trump and Putin discuss ceasefire in Ukraine

A key phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump regarding a possible ceasefire in Ukraine has ended, as announced by both the White House and Kremlin on Tuesday.

The call, which began at 1400 GMT, took more than two hours. White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino gave updates through social media site X, writing, “The call is going well, and still in progress.”

Ukraine Calls for Ceasefire Acceptance
Before the call, Ukraine had called on Russia to agree to a suggested 30-day ceasefire, a proposal backed by both Washington and Kyiv. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga highlighted the importance of Russia’s reaction, saying it was time for the nation to show its devotion to peace.

“It is time for Russia to show whether it really wants peace,” Sybiga remarked, emphasizing the need for an unconditional agreement to the ceasefire proposal.

On Sunday, Trump had drawn up the main issues to be discussed with Putin, including the possible division of some “assets” between Russia and Ukraine. “We will be discussing land. We will be discussing power plants,” he said, suggesting that negotiations on these matters had already started between the two sides.

“I believe we have a lot of it already covered very much by both of us, Ukraine and Russia,” Trump further noted, pointing out the ongoing negotiation over the sharing of certain assets.
