Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin spoke about the US-sponsored 30-day ceasefire plan to end the Ukraine war which entered its fourth year in 2025.
US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin spoke on the phone on Tuesday to discuss the mooted 30-day ceasefire in the raging Ukraine war which has entered its fourth year. Russian state-owned news agencies reported that the call lasted more than two-and-a-half hours.
Dan Scavino, Assistant to the President & White House Deputy Chief of Staff, previously stated the call is in progress between both leaders and the talks were still ongoing. The call is proceeding well,” Scavino had tweeted on social media platform X an hour after the call started. Scavino reported that the call between both presidents started at about 10:00 am (local time). Following the end of the call, Kremlin also indicated that the call went “very well”, US broadcaster CNN reports.
In the course of the discussion, both leaders are supposed to talk about ways to bring peace back in a way that is acceptable to both parties, although the US had informed Ukrainians that they are not likely to regain all the territory that was taken by Russia throughout the war. The New York Times reported that Trump and Putin did discuss the amount of land that Ukraine would lose.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was skeptical of the truce negotiations and stated that the war must first be paused and then Kyiv and Moscow can sit together on the negotiating table to talk about territory. Kyiv asserted that it hoped Moscow would “unconditionally” agree to the ceasefire. It is time for Russia to demonstrate whether it genuinely desires peace,” Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga stated.
