Making an unlikely entrance for any presidential candidate, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump swept into his rally in Wisconsin on Wednesday, October 30, in a garbage truck, dressed in the uniform of a garbage collector. The incident came one day after U.S. President Joe Biden described Trump’s supporters as “garbage.”
How do you like my garbage truck? This truck is in honour of Kamala and Joe Biden,” Trump said, speaking from the vehicle adorned with his campaign logo and the American flag to his zealous supporters.
Wearing a shiny safety vest, Trump began his speech with the words, “This rally is and always has been about the heart and soul of America: you.” He disparaged his enemies by saying, “And I must begin by saying 250 million Americans are not garbage. Let me tell you, without question, that my supporters are of far higher quality than crooked Joe or lying Kamala.”
He likewise attacked the Democratic Party, adding that its leaders have demeaned his supporters for the last nine years with “fascist, deplorable, irredeemable, and Nazis” names.
Lightening the mood somewhat, Trump described how he came to wear the garbage uniform for the rally. He related that one of his team members had said, “Sir, you know, the word garbage is the hottest thing right now. Would you like to drive a garbage truck?” He said he resisted initially but was won over when he was told it would make him appear thinner.
“I might never wear a blue jacket again. I might go in this,” he joked, turning a sea of laughter.
Former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy joined the fun by posting from the back of the garbage truck on his X account. He captioned, “We’re not garbage, we’re patriots recycling the American Dream.
President Biden also raised eyebrows and received criticism for his remarks on October 29, in which some Trump supporters were referred to as “garbage,” amid efforts by Vice President Kamala Harris to appeal for unity and cooperation in a politically divided landscape.
