US President Donald Trump during his second term, admitted his previous assertions as his government still strives to find an end to the current war. US President Donald Trump conceded that his repeated campaign vow to stop the Russia- Ukraine war within 24 hours, even before assuming office, was “a little bit sarcastic.”
During an interview with Full Measure, Trump, now in his second term, admitted his previous assertions as his administration still looks for an end to the ongoing conflict. Certainly, I was using a bit of sarcasm in saying that. What I mean is I’d like to get it wrapped up and…I think I’ll be successful,” he stated when he was questioned about the promise he kept making on the campaign trail.
This concession flies in the face of Trump’s earlier claims, including his declaration at a May 2023 CNN town hall that he would finish the war within 24 hours. “They’re dying, Russians and Ukrainians. I want them to stop dying. And I’ll have that done — I’ll have that done in 24 hours,\” Trump had claimed.
He had made the assertion again in his September debate with then-Vice President Kamala Harris when he stressed his agenda to negotiate between Russia and Ukraine. That is a war that’s dying to be settled. I will get it settled before I even become president. If I win, when I’m president-elect, what I’ll do is I’ll speak to one, I’ll speak to the other. I’ll get them together,” he had said.
US President’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, recently concluded negotiations in Moscow on a US-proposed ceasefire, which Ukraine has agreed to. When asked whether Russian President Vladimir Putin would reject the ceasefire, Trump voiced alarm over deaths and had faith in Putin’s ultimate agreement and cited his knowledge of the Russian leader.
Blessed news to this world since so many folks are dying. But I think I think he’s gonna agree. I do. I think I know him fairly well, and I think he’s gonna agree,” he said.
