US President Donald Trump tweeted about a “very good call” with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, stating that attempts were underway to reconcile the demands and needs of Russia and Ukraine. The roughly hour-long call followed Trump’s conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump said, “Most of the discussion was predicated on the call yesterday with President Putin in an attempt to get both Russia and Ukraine on the same page in terms of their requests and requirements.” He indicated that Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Michael Waltz would give the press a briefing on what was discussed during the call.
In Kyiv, officials confirmed that Zelenskyy had been informed about the 90-minute call a day earlier between Trump and Putin. During the call, Putin had committed to a 30-day partial cessation of assaults on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, a breakthrough in the war.
The Trump-Zelenskyy call comes after previous tensions when Trump and Vice President JD Vance had faulted the Ukrainian leader’s handling of the crisis.
In a similar vein, US envoy Steve Witkoff said that a meeting between Trump and Putin is “likely” to happen in the not-so-distant future. “They have a great rapport together,” Witkoff said, referring to their previous interactions during Trump’s first term. He described the recent call as “very positive” and “outcome-oriented,” referring to Trump’s focus on achieving things.
US Security Adviser Mike Waltz also declared that further discussions on a ceasefire in the war of Ukraine will be conducted soon in Riyadh. He averred, “I spoke today with my Russian counterpart Yuri Ushakov about President Trump’s efforts to end the war in Ukraine. Our technical teams will meet in Riyadh in the coming days to focus on implementing and expanding the partial ceasefire President Trump secured from Russia.”
Though diplomatic efforts continue, the Ukraine crisis remains at the forefront of international concern.
