Donald Trump signals support for national abortion ban with exceptions.
Former US President Donald Trump has signalled support for a national abortion ban after a certain number of weeks, excluding cases of rape, incest or danger to the mother’s life.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump said he will release a proposal on limiting abortions within weeks. He did not specify the number of weeks, leaving questions about his stance.
Trump cited his three Supreme Court appointees who enabled the overturning of Roe v. Wade, ending the constitutional right to abortion. This has led to new laws restricting abortions in some states and protecting access in others, like Maryland.
Promising exceptions for rape, incest and health risks, Donald Trump acknowledged the “political risks” amid polls showing most Americans oppose a complete federal ban. His comments came after the New York Times reported he had previously favoured a 16-week ban in private talks.
If enacted, a national law could override permissive state statutes. Democrats have forcefully criticised such plans. Biden has highlighted the issue to galvanise support.
Trump noted some European countries allow abortions up to certain weeks. However, his former VP, Mike Pence, said the 2020 campaign should have taken a stronger anti-abortion position.
The comments leave uncertainty around Trump’s position on the contentious issue in the run-up to the 2024 presidential elections.
