In a stunning policy shift, United States President Donald Trump has announced a novel program that will attempt to convince illegal immigrants to voluntarily depart the United States. During an interview with Fox Noticias, Trump discussed plans to offer financial incentives, including stipends and plane tickets, for individuals willing to self-deport. This plan would prioritize deportations of individuals with serious criminal histories while creating a doorway of opportunity for “good” individuals to potentially return to the U.S. legally.
Donald Trump Man detained for threatening Donald Trump and family with death explained, “We’re going to give them a stipend, some money, and a plane ticket. If they’re good and we want them back in, we’re going to work with them to get them back in as quickly as we can.” This is a reversal of his previous hard-line immigration policy, and it is now focused on facilitating the return of some into the country legally. But specifics on how the program would function and who would qualify are vague.
The program would also attempt to assist industries such as hospitality and agriculture by pairing them with suitable workers. Trump expressed the necessity of assisting farms and hotels in obtaining the workers they need, and in the process, unauthorized workers could depart and return lawfully.
During the interview, a clip featured a Mexican man who entered the U.S. over two decades ago. This undocumented individual, who has American citizen children, expressed support for Trump and stated that those who commit crimes should be deported. In response, Trump remarked, “I look at this man and say, this is a guy that we want to keep,” and added, “I’ll probably take heat for saying it.”
The Trump administration has been advocating for a system that promotes immigrants to organize their own deportation. The release of the CBP Home app is part of this effort, allowing unregistered immigrants to declare their intent to leave the country voluntarily, possibly facilitating the process of self-deportation.
Although the White House has not provided further details on this proposal, its viability is contingent upon a number of factors, including whether the undocumented immigrants will participate and how effective the CBP Home app can be in facilitating this. As the administration seeks to address labor shortages while promoting legal channels of immigration, the coming weeks will reveal how these proposals will materialize.
