Trump pledges to negotiate Ukraine peace, Zelenskyy responds

A notable event was the leakage of the conversation between then-President Trump and the leader of Ukraine; the Republican candidate for the presidency stated that the war between Ukraine and Russia should end soon after his victory in the presidential elections.

Trump’s statement has emerged at what can be considered a critical time, as the hostilities between Ukraine and Russia started in February 2022 with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Zelenskyy also confirmed the conversation with Trump and thanked them for their support, especially for military assistance, which contributed to the Ukrainian people and helped to resist the Russian invasion.

PEACE TO THE WORLD

Addressing a post on the social media platform Truth Social, Trump noted that, as the president, he will usher in peace to the world and end the war that claimed many lives. Regarding the conflict, Trump said that both sides can negotiate a deal to halt violence and open the way to prosperity.

Although Trump has never elaborated a concrete policy, he has at some point claimed that Ukraine might have to give up some of its territory to attain peace. This position has been widely discussed, even though Zelenskyy has categorically ruled out any negotiations with Russia as long as there is a Russian military presence in Ukraine.

ZELENSKYY’S RESPONSE

In his own words, Zelenskyy congratulated Trump on his election as a Republican party candidate and denounced the recent attempt on his life. Zelenskyy also appreciated the “indispensable bipartite and tricameral support of Ukraine by American politicians throughout the stand for freedom and independence.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi thanked the United States for its assistance to enhance Ukraine’s readiness to counteract Russian terrorism. Still, he stressed that Ukraine can negotiate only if Russian troops leave Ukraine’s territory and Ukraine restores its borders as of 1991.

Of course, the situation in Ukraine and how the next presidential administration may influence the further functioning of the conflict will inevitably remain one of the critical topics discussed during the US presidential elections.
