Trump reiterates anti-abortion stance, stirs debate ahead of polls.
In a pre-recorded message to an anti-abortion Christian group, Donald Trump urged the protection of “innocent life”, reigniting the issue before elections. The former US President addressed The Danbury Institute, aligned with churches wanting a complete abortion ban. A panel backed the hardline stance and criticized openness to IVF.
Albert Mohler, head of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, termed IVF the “commodification of the embryo”. However, Trump supports IVF accessibility.
In his remarks, Trump praised the audience’s “devotion to God and country”, calling for unity on values like religion and heritage. He warned, “You cannot vote Democrat” as they oppose religion.
While Republicans are split on the issue, with some willing to relax rules, Trump has distanced himself from a nationwide abortion prohibition. He says the matter must be left to the states.
However, Democrats aim to connect Trump to stringent curbs in some states and an Alabama ruling impacting fertility procedures. Trump’s conviction in the ‘Stop the Steal’ case also arose.
Mohler attacked the opposition over transgender rights, underscoring the fusion of faith and nationalism. The remarks reopen debate weeks before midterm elections, with religion and abortion as rallying points.
