Rubio, who also skipped the G-20 foreign ministers’ gathering in February, cited South Africa’s case at the International Court of Justice, which accuses Israel, one of America’s closest allies, of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
US President Donald Trump will not be attending the upcoming G20 summit to be hosted in South Africa, State Secretary Marco Rubio said, indicating that the nation has been “consistently unaligned” with American policy.
Rubio explained, “We did not attend this year’s G-20 hosted by South Africa at either the foreign ministers level or the level of the presidents. They quite clearly, on the international scene and in various multinational institutions, have consistently voted against America’s interests repeatedly.
Yet, Cyril Ramaphosa’s spokesperson in South Africa, Vincent Magweny, stated that Washington has been engaging in all G20-related activities and further said that the country has not been given an official notification from the US regarding Trump’s non-attendance at the event later this year.
Meanwhile, when asked about his appearance at the G20 Summit, Trump said, “South Africa’s out of control and it’s been out of control for a long time. I’m not sure, I’m not sure.” The US and South Africa have been at a crossroads for quite some time. Rubio, who did not participate at the G-20 foreign ministers’ meeting last month, invoked South Africa’s application at the International Court of Justice, which charges Israel, one of America’s strongest allies, with genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
