Trump vows to Veto national abortion ban in potential second term

Former US President Donald Trump announced that he would veto any ban on abortion across the country if he happens to serve for a second term. The apparent major stance has been announced via Truth Social during the vice-presidential debate between the Republican nominee, Sen. JD Vance from Ohio, and Democratic Gov. Tim Walz from Minnesota.

Trump has said,

“Everybody knows I would not stand for a federal abortion ban, under any circumstances, and would veto it because it’s the states’ decision based upon the will of the voters.”

Quite different from what he said earlier on this issue, he refrained from directly discussing it during a September 10 debate and stayed away from confirming whether he would veto such a national ban.

A report from The Hill pointed out that Trump has struggled to connect with women voters and is working to develop a strong message for them. Democrats said a Trump administration could institute national abortion restrictions through the Comstock Act, an 1873 law banning the mailing of materials about abortion.

Harris’ campaign spokesperson, Sarafina Chitika, responded that Trump was attempting to “clean up his disastrous debate performance”; the women, though, suffered from the consequences of his policies.

During the vice presidential debate, Walz shared tales of women whose lives were put in danger at the hands of strict laws against abortion, to which Vance accepted that Republicans needed to work on their messaging of the issue. He followed the ongoing stance held by Trump in stating that decisions over abortion had to come from state governments after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.

The Harris campaign so far has centered strongly on access to abortion, warning that a second Trump presidency could mean even more cuts to reproductive healthcare.
