Trump’s China strategy: double-edged sword for global trade?

As US trade negotiations unfold in recent weeks, a sharper but contradictory image of President Donald Trump’s view of the international economy emerges. It centres on an effort to economically isolate China while at the same time seeking greater access to its huge markets—a balancing act that threatens to puzzle allies and trading partners alike.

Donald Trump’s method of foreign trade, especially in the case of China, is a confusing contradiction. While seeking to limit Chinese power and protect US supply lines, his government at the same time moves for increased access to China’s huge markets. The double game underpinned by a combination of tariffs, export restrictions and diplomatic gestures has blurred a line to confuse allies and rivals alike about the real trajectory of US policy.

The question now is whether this contradictory stance is a calculated balancing act or whether it will ultimately be a double-edged sword, cutting both ways in global trade and risking hastening the very economic fragmentation Trump is trying to prevent.

While strong rhetoric, concessions obtained to date have been minor, and future negotiations include nations for whom the stark “US vs. China” narrative is not as clear-cut. Domestically, pressure increases and even within the administration, appetite for ratcheting up trade tensions is limited.

Michael Strain, Director of Economic Policy Studies at the American Enterprise Institute encapsulates the befuddlement: “I don’t see a clearly defined strategy, I don’t see a clear goal or set of goals. I see a desire to import fewer products from China.”

Initial trade cases illustrate this uncertainty. Britain quickly finalized an agreement with the US, gaining tariff cuts with modest concessions, while China retaliated against US tariffs with mounting countermeasures before signing a brief truce that relaxed tariff burdens. European leaders, understanding the context, see these actions less as a strategy template and more as attempts to avert further escalation.
