It is rumored that Russia has actually restricted the hiring of two journalists who are working with outstanding worldwide media.
Sergey Karolin, a citizen of Russia and Israel, has been detained after media outlets, including The Associated Press, have reported. He had already worked as the news agency’s employee.
He has been labeled “extreme” as a result of his function in the charitable organization set up by the recently deceased opposition leader, Alexei Navalny, which he denies.
Earlier, Konstantin Gabo was apprehended for the identical alleged offense, and the group is looking into the matter.
Mr. Gabo writes journalism pieces that are published in many different outlets, such as Reuters.
Both men face at least two years in prison each if faulted or found guilty of alleged “having directly participated in an extremist organization.” Now they are the latest “press employees” who find themselves in the dock as of late Russia, which became notorious for the repression of the mass media that has led to limitations on press freedom.
“We know very well how sensitive AP is to Russian journalists, and for good reasons,” said the US Press Agency in the statement. “Our goal is to gather additional facts.”
Mr. Karolin and Mr. Gabo, a video editor employed for the YouTube channel of Mr. Navalny, are accused of producing information products. Mr. Navalny is a very famous opponent of President Vladimir Putin, criticizing the political system. In February, Mr. Navalny died in an Arctic’s penal colony, where he had been kept.
In 2021, among his supporters, at the mention of Navalny’s name, organizations were declared extremist because anyone who sympathizes with him risks prison.
Ivan Zhdanov ich, a reporter from Forbes Russia, was one of the people detained this week as well. He became a whistleblower and publicly condemned the Russian army. In 2022, the Russian parliament passed a sentence for the imprisonment of false newscasters to a maximum of 15 years in jail.
Mr. Kareli, 41 years old, is an employee of the Associated Press and the German public broadcasting Deutsche Welled. Mr. Gabo is a producer on a freelance basis and has been working with different organizations, including Reuters, among others.
