U.N. Chief urges ceasefire in Israel and warns of Rafah humanitarian crisis

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres focused on the growing international consensus achieved during his recent mission to Jordan. In his speech, he enumerated the necessity to explain to the Israelis the critical nature of a ceasefire and the potential catastrophe involving brutality upon the Rafah.

At his press conference, Guterres highlighted that the level of concern on this issue was getting much more serious among the world community. He wondered how we, the EU, and the Muslim world had echoed that message. The message to Israel is clear: a ground invasion of Rafah should be prevented, in addition to the developing humanitarian crisis.

While making a visit to the Wihdat camp, UNRWA in Jordan, the only United Nations agency that provides critical health and education facilities to Palestinians, the United Nations Secretary General applauded the agency. UNRWA was closely allied with the beacon, the hope and dignity for millions of refugees in the region.

Guterres highlighted UNRWA’s special services for its beneficiaries without alternative support measures. He affirmed that he realizes the difficult circumstances and illuminated that UNRWA inspires many.

Jordan, along with the Arab-Israeli conflict in the center, has more Palestinian refugees than any of Israel’s neighborhood countries by several 2.4M. A majority of Jordanians have Palestinian lineage.

UNRWA was subject to many problems afterward. Israelis accused up to 12 of their staff members of being accomplices in the attacks of Hamas in October. The US, the UNRWA’s largest donor, and other countries stopped paying their share and provision temporarily, threatening the future progression of the agency. On the other hand, certain countries have taken the responsibility through restoring their aid.

In the situation mentioned, the Secretary-General highlighted the UNRWA agencies’ immense role in balancing and creating society’s belief, stability, and peace. He made it clear that it would be dangerous and even potentially life-threatening if peacekeeping services were to end abruptly and, at the same time, underlined his trust that the ongoing independent internal U.N. investigation would further strengthen and improve the agency.
