UK says India’s cooperation needed to resolve Nijjar row

As Canada continues to pursue its case against India over the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the United Kingdom said it has “every confidence in the independence and fairness of the Canadian judicial process.”

As the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, continues to garner support for his campaign against India, Britain has thrown its weight behind the ongoing probes against India.

While alleging Indian involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey last year, Canada this week accused India of running a full-scale espionage and organized crime network in Canada.

After going public with the claims, Trudeau called British PM Sir Keir Starmer to brief him.

In a statement Wednesday, the British Foreign Office said it had “full confidence in Canada’s judicial system.” The Foreign Office added, “The cooperation from the Government of India with Canada’s process is the right next step.”

“We are in close contact with our Canadian partners regarding the serious developments outlined by independent investigations in Canada. Britain has complete confidence in Canada’s judicial system.

The Foreign Office said respect for sovereignty and the rule of law is a must. Last week, Canada notified India that it had designated Indian High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma and other diplomats as ‘persons of interest’ in an ongoing case.

While none of the participants involved in the public statements said so, it is known that here, the case refers to the Canadian allegations over Nijjar’s killing.
