Ukraine claims recapture of land in Kharkiv, reversing Russian gains

Ukraine’s forces claimed that they had retaken some territory in the Kharkiv region, which Moscow had largely seized in the earlier stages of the war.

Kyiv, Ukraine Ukraine’s forces have reportedly regained some neighborhoods in the Kharkiv region in the northeast of the country that Russia attacked in the spring primarily to expand from its annexation of the Crimean peninsula in March but struggled to achieve much further breakthroughs.

Ukraine’s 3rd Separate Assault Brigade stated late Thursday that its forces had seized nearly two square kilometers in that area.

The time of the attack, its severity, and the zone of the operation are unknown, and it is challenging to assume what other consequences it will unleash on the battlefield.

Ukraine’s reported counteroffensive in the Kharkiv region comes at a time its side has bought new tactical advantage and shifted the dynamics this month.

Kyiv acted suddenly to invade Russia’s western Kursk region on August 6 while, at the same time, escalating aerial assaults on Russian bases and fuel supplies that have caused fires far inside Russian territory this week.

On Friday, some new details came to light regarding the extent of the damage and the casualties of some of those attacks.

Moscow said it destroyed a Ukrainian drone that it said was planning an attack on a distant Russian air base in its Volgograd region; AP analysis of satellite imagery captured on Friday reveals damage to an airfield that the Russians reported was used by Moscow in the war and reportedly stored glide bombs.

On the other hand, an attack on a cargo ferry at the port at Kavkaz in the Krasnodar region of Russia on Thursday assaulted and killed two and left 13 injured, said the Russia state news agency Tass yesterday. Self-styled health officials were quoted by Tass as saying that four of the injured had to be admitted to the hospital and one person was still missing.
