Ukraine deploys AI-powered drones against Russian targets

Ukraine is deploying dozens of domestically made AI-augmented systems, which enable its drones to reach the battlefield targets without piloting, a senior official said, disclosing new details about its race against Russia to harness automation.

A senior official said that the Ukrainian government uses dozens of domestically made AI-augmented systems for its drones to hit targets on the battlefield sans pilots, disclosing new details about the race against Russia to harness automation.

Systems that employ artificial intelligence enable inexpensive drones laden with explosives to identify – or fly – to their target area, covering extensive signal jamming that has degraded the effectiveness of manually piloted drones.

The use of AI, especially in drone target finding and flight control, represents an increasingly important emerging front in the technology race that has unfolded since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Dozens of solutions from Ukrainian manufacturers are already on the market. They are being procured and delivered to the armed forces and other defense forces, said Ukraine’s deputy defense minister Kateryna Chernohorenko of drone AI systems.

She added that they are currently being used in an orientated way during special operations.

Fully automated drone systems are in high demand for soldiers searching for ways to beat the rapidly increasing use of electronic warfare on the battlefield.

These electronic warfare systems create some sort of protection dome around their location by sending out robust signals that disturb communication between drones and their pilots.
