Defense analysts say a potential $61 billion US military aid package for Ukraine could turn the tide of the war. Key systems Kyiv urgently needs include advanced air defenses, long-range artillery, and missiles.
Air defenses remain a high priority as Russia sustains heavy bombardments with over 1200 missiles used so far in 2022. While Ukraine has received Stinger and Patriot systems, its skies remain vulnerable. President Zelensky has called for at least seven more advanced Patriots.
On the ground, Russia has captured over 225 sq miles of land since October through intense artillery barrages. The HIMARS rocket system has aided Ukraine with its mobility and precision strikes, but more will be needed. Tanks and fighting vehicles would also bolster Ukrainian forces.
The US is reportedly readying its advanced MLRS rockets, acknowledging artillery’s importance. Its longest-range version doubles its firing distance to 186 miles, allowing strikes deeper into Russian-held areas like Crimea.
By procuring more air defenses, artillery, and long-range rockets, Kyiv hopes to protect its cities better and turn the tide on key fronts.
As winter sets in and both sides mobilize, defense analysts say Western aid, if expedited, could shift momentum and relieve pressure on Ukrainian troops fighting to regain lost terrain. But Russia is also rapidly adapting its drone and missile tactics, so the outcome remains precarious.
