In the most unforgiving hours of such a crisis, Russia’s satellites have struck again, this time at Ukraine’s biggest power plant, killing, injuring, and leaving a wake of destruction. The Trypilska plant that supplied the largest region in Ukraine, including the capital Kyiv, Cherkasy, and Zhytomyr areas, is also under attack. The transformer, turbines, and generators were pulverized, and everything was already in the flames and dense smoke. Fortunately, the workers reacted promptly and sought shelter just when the first drone came to strike. They were, therefore, safe and free. As for those men who could now only watch in awe as the fire consumed their workplace, there was also much destruction that looked like a lot of tasks to recover from.
These kinds of attacks on Ukraine’s energy assets are an act of revenge on Russia when, especially this infrastructure of power. It could be Russian President Vladimir Putin, who’s at the helm of the talks from Moscow, interconnecting the strikes with the counterattack actions that had been targeted at Russian oil refineries.
It is important to say that the negative consequences of this kind of action are not tied only to the Trypilska plant but spread to the whole of Ukraine. The night raid has also been used to destroy power lines in Kharkiv, the second biggest city in Ukraine, which has made over 200,000 people in the city live without electricity anymore. These attacks may have a detrimental effect in the long run if the summer season is now upon us and the demand for electricity, such as for air conditioning, increases immensely.
The frequent and deadly enemy attacks remind the defenders of Ukraine about the matter of the hour, which is to strengthen the security perimeter of their vital energy infrastructure facilities. The authorities of Ukraine stopped these assaults with their air-defense systems, although procurement of new weapons that can be used to shoot down the missiles is retarded by bureaucratic delays. Therefore, the country remains vulnerable.
The further destruction of Ukraine emerges as an important fact. It shows that quick reinforcements and improved protection systems should be accounted for. Resilience to cope with the problems will be the criterion of a tested country’s ability in a time of upheaval.
