UN approves ceasefire as Gaza attack kills 8, including children.
At least eight people were killed in an Israeli assault on a Gaza City residential building on Saturday. Most casualties included children, while several others sustained injuries, as per reports. The move came even as the UN Security Council finally approved an immediate ceasefire between the two sides engaged in intense fighting.
Hamas said it was ready for indirect negotiations based on principles respecting people’s demands and resistance. However, Israel’s UN envoy countered they would not engage in “meaningless talks” that can be exploited.
Since October 7, the escalating conflict has seen over 37,000 Palestinian deaths and 84,000 injuries in the Israeli offensive on Gaza. Meanwhile, Israeli casualties from Hamas attacks also rose to over 1,100, with some still captive.
The human cost has been immense, with civilian populated areas repeatedly seeing bombardment. As global calls mounted for restraint, the UN resolution offers hope the warring sides will now begin exit negotiations in good faith.
However, past experience indicates that a durable solution remains elusive, given the deep-rooted political impasse. Overall, peace depends on addressing underlying grievances through a comprehensive diplomatic process.
