India abstains as UNGA adopts resolution to end Israel’s occupation of Palestine.
New Delhi: At an emergency session, India was among 43 countries abstaining on a resolution passed by the UN General Assembly demanding an end to Israel’s occupation of Palestine within a year.
The resolution saw 124 nations vote in favor and 14 against, including the US, as it called on Israel to comply with international law and withdraw military forces from occupied territory by 2023.
It asked Israel to evacuate settlers, dismantle parts of the wall constructed in the region, and repeal legislation maintaining an unlawful situation as per the 2004 International Court of Justice opinion.
India, along with Australia, the UK, and several European nations stayed neutral as has been its position on most Israel-related resolutions.
After initially backing Israel post-Hamas terror attacks, New Delhi’s stance evolved to push for an immediate ceasefire and dialogue for a two-state solution. It also sought the resumption of humanitarian aid for Gaza as hostilities escalated this year.
Japan, which voted for the motion, said it valued ICJ’s work and Israeli settlements undermine the two-state vision, hoping talks can resolve issues.
