UN head travels to the Gaza border to renew calls for a truce

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres today made a passionate appeal for peace as he visited the battered Gaza border region. Witnessing the destruction first-hand seemed to intensify his plea for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

Traveling to the Gaza side of the Erez Crossing, Guterres saw up close the impacted areas and the suffering of civilians caught in the crossfires. Burnt-out buildings, destroyed infrastructure, and the lingering scent of explosives filled the air. As Gaza’s residents struggled to pick up the pieces, their desperation was written on their faces.

The Secretary-General engaged with paramedics and other aid workers working tirelessly. He heard harrowing accounts of trying to evacuate the wounded amid intense bombardment. Guterres also spoke to families who had lost their homes and livelihoods in the crisis.

Addressing the media later, his voice was thick with emotion. Guterres reiterated that peaceful negotiations are the only path forward. He urged both sides to end the cycle of violence that helps no one. The UN chief also pledged full support to the Palestinian people and called for Israel and Hamas to respect international laws.

As world leaders continue diplomatic efforts, Guterres’ visit powerfully put a human face on the devastating cost of conflict. Witnessing scorched earth where once vibrant communities stood, he redoubled his calls for compassion and an immediate ceasefire between all parties. Only then, he said, can the long road to genuine peace begin.
