The tragic death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has sent shockwaves through the community, especially after revelations from his wife, Paulette Thompson, regarding threats he received prior to the fatal incident. Thompson, 50, was shot outside a hotel in Midtown Manhattan on December 4 while walking to the company’s annual investor conference.
According to New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, a masked gunman lay in wait and opened fire as Thompson approached, marking the attack as a “premeditated, preplanned, targeted attack.” The shooter struck Thompson in the back and leg from behind. Despite being rushed to Mount Sinai West hospital, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Paulette Thompson told NBC News of her anguish: “There had been some threats.” She said she did not know details but that her husband did mention people had threatened him. “I just really can’t comment right now intelligently on this,” she also said and added that police investigators told her the attack was planned.
The NYPD released photos of the suspect, described as a white male, wearing all black, who was last seen fleeing the scene on an e-bike. According to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny, although the motive behind the murder is still unknown, evidence indicates Thompson was targeted. Investigations continue.
UnitedHealthcare Group issued a statement in response to the incident expressing its sadness. “We are all shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of our friend and colleague Brian Thompson,” the statement read. “Brian was a valued and respected colleague and friend to many, and we will miss him greatly. We are working closely with the New York Police Department and request patience and understanding as this inquiry unfolds. Our thoughts and condolences go out to Brian’s family and to all who were close to him.”
Thompson had been the chief executive officer of UnitedHealthcare since 2021, leaving an indelible mark of leadership and commitment to the company.
