The country of Bangladesh is experiencing violence and instability after the exit of former premier, Sheikha Hasina. The country has already seen several incidents targeting leaders of the Awami League and minorities, particularly Hindus, in which at least 20 people died.
As per the news, the event led to a violent protest by the students for a quota system in jobs for freedom fighters’ children. This has resulted in what may be described as a rampage of the Awami League patronage by attacking their homes and business premises, patronage across the country.
The main sources of information, the eyewitnesses’ testimonies, give a rather unfavorable vision. In a similar incident, in Comilla city, the house of the former councilor, Md Shah Alam, was burnt by a group of people.
The Student Wing office of the Awami League in Dhaka was attacked; some portions of the building were burnt. Four individuals were murdered after an enraged group attacked ASI MP Shafiqul Islam Shimul’s home in Dhaka.
Sadly, the instances of violence have also cropped up in one of the minority areas, the Hindus. The rights groups and diplomats have decried what they term as the increasing targeting of Hindu establishments, places of residence as well as worship. A Somali individual was said to have bludgeoned to death one Hindu man in the Bagerhat district south of Bangladesh.
The incident turned fatal for the people of Khulna division when a group of people burned down Zabeer International Hotel of Jashore district Awami League General Secretary Shahin Chakladar, in which a total of twenty-four people died.
In an attempt to bring order and help flatten the concern, the Bangladeshi presidency has declared the creation of a transitional government with Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus at its helm. This was made known to the people in a meeting attended by the President, the commanders of the armed forces, and student representatives.
Thus, while the country faces this wave of violence and societies experience different sorts of unrest, it is now up to the interim government to step up to its role and fulfill the mandate of ensuring the safety of protected groups and finding a rational and efficient solution to the conflict.
