US allies reconsider intelligence sharing amid Trump-Russia thaw

While President Donald Trump seeks to repair relations with Russia, Washington’s allies are raising alarms over what it may mean for intelligence sharing. NBC News, quoting four sources, reports that some U.S. allies are considering scaling back their intelligence sharing with the United States out of concern their foreign assets may have their sensitive information compromised.

One of the officials noted the importance of protecting foreign assets and agents, suggesting that spy agencies may choose to withhold essential information to secure the safety and confidentiality of their agents.

Other nations like Saudi Arabia and Israel, as well as members of the Five Eyes club—US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada—are said to be among those rethinking their intelligence-sharing agreements. Negotiations on the issue are said to be in progress, however, no official decisions have been made.

Responding, a White House official played down the incident, claiming the United States’ “unrivalled intelligence capabilities.” Brian Hughes commented that those very capabilities are the reason why programs such as the Five Eyes alliance exist. He added that President Trump is aware of the threats from antagonists and is determined to work with allies who see the nuances of international security in the wake of the last administration’s policies.

On the contrary, major allies like the UK, Israel, and Canada have been trying to minimize the report, pledging their continued commitment to cooperation. According to a government spokesperson, “The US is the UK’s closest ally, and we will continue to cooperate closely on defense, intelligence, and security matters.” Likewise, Canada’s Security Intelligence Service emphasized the long-standing character of their relationship with the US and the strategic value of their national security cooperation.

A similar sentiment was expressed by an Israeli official who stated that ties between Israel and the United States are strong and unshakeable, especially regarding intelligence sharing.
