US Ambassador visits disputed Japanese islands, stresses deterrence

US Ambassador Underlines Security Assistance During Japan Island Visits.

As Japan strengthens its coastal defenses, US Ambassador Rahm Emanuel visited islands facing tensions with China. Earlier this year, Tokyo unveiled plans to bolster long-range strike capabilities along its southwest flank under a new security strategy.

During trips to Yonaguni and Ishigaki, Emanuel emphasized America’s security commitment to its key ally. The Ambassador was the first from the US to visit Yonaguni, just 110 km from Taiwan. In 2016, he met JSDF personnel and a missile defense unit stationed there.

Emanuel also consulted local fishermen impacted by China’s rising regional assertiveness. One described being unable to sell catch for a week after Beijing fired missiles into Japan’s waters following Nancy Pelosi’s Taiwan visit.

On social media platform X, the ambassador stressed the importance of deterrence for peace in Ishigaki, home to Japan’s coast guard. Without it, countries may resort to economic coercion.

Japan’s coast guard protects local boats near the disputed Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands, where Chinese vessels often challenge them. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi welcomed insights from Emanuel’s trip improving understanding of Japan’s defensive shift.

While officials support beefed-up troop presence, some residents in Okinawa protest increased militarization risks. Governor Denny Tamaki supports the Japan-US alliance but seeks a lighter burden for his prefecture, which hosts half of American forces in Japan. He also critiques military aircraft use of Yonaguni airport.

As tensions rise, collaboration with allies remains crucial to stability. However, perspectives on the human impacts of defense policies warrant address.
