The United States government recently declared an extra $3 in what has been considered a contentious policy. 5 billion in military aid to Israel, despite the complaints of human rights abuses against Palestinians in the occupied territories.
The Department of State has informed Congress about the release of the Biden administration’s funds from the financial supplement of $14. In April, the US Congress approved credit lines totaling $5 billion. This aid is in addition to over $3 billion that the US extends per year in military aid to Israel.
Among them, some amount of the School’s new financial aid will be given to the Netzah Yehuda battalion, which was involved in the violation of Palestinians’ rights in the West Bank.
Although the State Department recognized the accusations, it did not impose punishment on the unit, claiming to be content with Israel’s actions concerning the allegedly violated “Rights.”
The move to continue supporting the Netzah Yehuda battalion was made following the prior identification of serious human rights violations by Antony Blinken, the US secretary of state, against the Palestinians committed by the battalion. This resulted in an investigation under the Leahy Law, which aims to limit the provision of military help to foreign units that engage in human rights abuses.
This has elicited a lot of criticism from human rights activists who believe that the US is in denial of the brutalities being committed by the Israeli Defense Forces against Palestinians.
Israeli attacks against civilians in several decades, including the recent attack on Gaza, where several thousands of civilians were killed, have deepened more concern about how Israel treats the Palestinian people.
Thus, by the Biden administration offering more military support to Israel amidst the claims of human rights abuses, people have questioned the US’s readiness to abide by international law and human rights in its foreign policy.
