US expresses concern over escalating tensions and reiterates Israel’s right to self-defense.
The US has characterized its military presence in the Middle East as ‘robust’ following Israel’s intensification of operations against Hezbollah and Hamas.
White House national security spokesperson John Kirby said reinforcement had been sent since Iran attacked Israel in April, without providing details.
The Pentagon stated an aircraft carrier strike group and Marine expeditionary unit will continue operating in the eastern Mediterranean. Pat Ryder said defensive air capabilities will be reinforced in the coming days.
While expressing concern over widening conflict, Kirby asserted Israel’s right to ‘eliminate the threat to their people and land’. He was referring to Israel pressing ahead with strikes in Lebanon after eliminating Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah.
Fears are growing Israel may launch ground incursions capitalizing on momentum after killing prominent figures.
Despite acute tensions, Kirby said no immediate plans exist to evacuate US citizens from Lebanon but urged departure while possible routes remain.
As leadership questions arose after Nasrallah’s killing, the US said it was too early to comment but reiterated defending Israel from Iranian proxy threats.
