US strikes hit Iranian-backed targets in Syria after attacks

US Strikes Targets in Syria in Retaliation for Attacks on American Forces.

In a swift response to recent attacks on US forces in Syria, the United States military has carried out airstrikes against targets in the war-torn country. The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) said the strikes were aimed at “Iranian-aligned targets” and were meant to send a “clear message” to armed groups backed by Iran operating in the region.

Attacks against US and coalition partners in the region will not be tolerated,” Kurilla warned, adding that the strikes will “degrade the Iranian-backed groups’ ability to plan and launch future attacks.”

The US military did not provide specific details about the groups targeted or whether the strikes resulted in any casualties. However, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based monitoring group, reported that the airstrikes killed four Syrian members of Iranian-backed armed factions and severely injured 10 others in the Deir ez-Zor countryside.

The US has approximately 900 troops stationed in eastern Syria, with an additional 2,500 based in neighboring Iraq. Their stated mission is to advise and assist local forces in the ongoing battle against the remnants of the Islamic State (ISIS) group, which once controlled large swaths of both Syria and Iraq.

On Sunday, an Israeli airstrike also hit a residential building in the Damascus suburb of Sayyida Zeinab, killing seven civilians, including women and children, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA). Twenty others were reported to have been wounded in the attack.

Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes in Syria in recent years, often targeting what it claims are Iranian-backed armed groups that pose a threat to its security. However, the Jewish state rarely acknowledges these attacks on its neighbor.

The US strikes, framed as a response to attacks on its forces, are likely to further inflame tensions and raise concerns about the potential for a wider escalation of the conflict.

As the international community grapples with the ongoing crisis in Syria, the risk of miscalculation and unintended consequences looms large, highlighting the urgent need for diplomatic solutions to the region’s intractable problems.
