Quad declares support for UN reforms, permanent UNSC seat for India.
The Quad alliance has underscored the need for extensive reforms in the United Nations Security Council to make the international body more inclusive and representative.
In the ‘Wilmington Declaration’ issued after the 4th Quad summit, the leaders highlighted the need to expand the UNSC by ensuring more participation of under-represented regions.
India’s persistent demands for a permanent seat in a reformed UNSC also found backing at bilateral talks of Prime Minister Modi and US President Joe Biden.
“President Biden shared US’ support for initiatives to reform global institutions reflecting India’s important voice, including permanent membership for India in a reformed UNSC,” said a White House statement.
The Quad members jointly reiterated their commitment to the UN Charter and called for comprehensive reform of the three pillars.
They stressed expansion in permanent and non-permanent categories of UNSC membership with slots for Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
This follows Biden extending similar support during his meeting with PM Modi on the sidelines of the 2021 G20 summit in India.
The endorsement underlines the recognition of India as a major responsible global power warranting permanent representation at the high table of decision-making.
