US urges Lebanon to disarm Hezbollah: Lebanon’s response

The Lebanese presidency delivered a response to US Special Envoy Tom Barrack on Monday over the disarmament of Hezbollah. American diplomat Thomas Barrack was received by Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun in Beirut on Monday and delivered the reply of the United States to the Lebanese state on disarming Hezbollah.

Barrack, special envoy for Syria and ambassador to Turkiye, described Lebanon’s response as “something spectacular” and that he was “unbelievably satisfied” with the response, which has not yet been released publicly. The trip took place amid ongoing Israeli airstrikes against suspected Hezbollah targets in Lebanon that have resulted in civilian casualties since a ceasefire took effect on November 27, 2024.

Here’s what you should know about the visit and its significance for Lebanon and Israel. Barrack travelled to receive the official reaction of the Lebanese state to a US proposal given to Lebanon on June 19, to demilitarise the Hezbollah group.

As part of a ceasefire agreement with Israel in November, Hezbollah was to pull its militiamen out of the south of the Litani River, which traverses south Lebanon and up into the Bekaa Valley, and hand over military installations and bases there.

But sources close to the deal said that wording was deliberately vague, allowing both sides to interpret it. The US and Israel have decided to interpret the ceasefire as being dependent on Hezbollah’s full disarmament throughout the nation.

Barrack hinted in his post-meeting statement that assistance for Lebanon would be conditional upon the Lebanese government responding according to what he described as a “region moving at Mach speed”, though he refused to say what it was moving towards.
