Venezuela ruling party maintains legislative control amid division

Venezuela’s socialist ruling party won a majority in the National Assembly, capturing almost 83 per cent of the votes in Sunday’s elections, with broad divisions between the opposition parties.

Venezuela’s socialist government party maintained its substantial majority in the National Assembly in a Sunday poll, securing close to 83% of votes, the electoral body reported, in an election boycotted by some opposition leaders against the backdrop of deep division within opposition parties against President Nicolas Maduro’s government.

Some of the nation’s top opposition leaders urged citizens to boycott voting in protest of the official outcome of the July 2024 presidential election, which the opposition claims to have won but which authorities claim was a victory for Maduro.

Sunday’s legislative outcome will maintain the governing party in charge of the attorney general’s office and the Supreme Court, whose members are chosen by legislators. Officialdom did not provide a total number of seats won by each party but identified 40 legislators representing multiple parties that have secured seats.

A 6.25% vote went to a coalition that has been deemed close to the governing socialist party, while an opposition coalition received 5.17%, CNE rector Carlos Quintero stated in a statement aired on state television. Turnout to elect 24 state governors and 285 legislators was 42.6% of 21 million registered voters, Quintero stated, close to the turnout in the 2021 elections.
