The White House has notified Congress about its plan to send over $1 billion of new weapons to Israel. However, the US does not support a full-scale invasion by the Israeli military in Rafah, Gaza. The shipment of bombs was stopped last week on the ground that it would cause civilian casualties in the areas with high populations.
On the other hand, Congress can even veto the package if a majority of the lawmakers vote against it. The shipment is envisaged to contain tank ammunition, tactical vehicles, and mortar rounds. Israeli tanks have reached the residential areas in Rafah even deeper; the medical services also have been reduced.
Democrat Senator Chris Van Hollen condemned the decision; he requested a stop to the arms transfers until Israel takes care of the Rafah and humanitarian assistance. A recent US State Department report has alluded to the American weapons being used in violation of international law, which is a matter of concern.
The remark is made when weapons transfers to Israel are now a political issue for President Biden in the run-up to the 2024 election. The republican lawmakers put forward the legislation that will stop the further pauses in weapons shipments. The conflict has brought a lot of deaths, in Gaza alone thousands were killed.
