Western Leaders call for restraint amid threats of Iran-Israel clash

Five international powers bar the US urge the Israeli As opposition to the military operations in Gaza escalates, they appeal for a halt in violence.

Five western countries have urged Iran and its allies to stop what they expect to be reprisal attacks on Israel in relation to the assassination of Hamas and Hezbollah chiefs recently.

The presidents of the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, as well as the prime minister of Italy, released a statement on Monday to declare their backing for “efforts to maintain the cessation of hostilities” in the Middle East and the end to the war on Gaza.

Specifically, by threatening an attack on Israel, which is a member of the nuclear alliance with the United States, Iran knowingly places its military in jeopardy, the statement said.

The western powers also supported the latest attempt by the United States of America, Qatar, and Egypt to facilitate the signing of a ceasefire agreement to put an end to the 10-month war.

Concern that Israel’s war will increase the probability of total regional warfare more than doubled after the sensationalist assassination last month of Hamas’ political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran as well as Hezbollah chief operative Fuad Shukr in Beirut.

Experts said to Al Jazeera that the killings that had been attributed to Israel could influence the chances of a ceasefire agreement to bring about the end of the war on Gaza.

Both Iran and Hezbollah continue to deny that they want a full-scale conflict, but they insist that they are fully prepared for one if it does happen.
