The US urges India to press Russia on ending the Ukraine war.
After PM Modi‘s recent visit to Moscow, the White House said India’s strong ties with Russia give it leverage to influence President Putin over the Ukraine conflict.
During the trip, Modi stressed India’s commitment to peace and cooperation to resolve the issue. Putin thanked India for its efforts to find a peaceful solution.
Washington has openly conveyed concerns over New Delhi’s relationship with Moscow to Indian authorities. However, it sees India as a strategic partner and will maintain robust dialogue.
During a briefing, the White House spokesperson said India can urge Putin to end the “brutal and unprovoked” war in Ukraine, as the Russian President can choose to stop it.
The State Department also reiterated calls for India to back efforts for an enduring peace in Ukraine based on territorial integrity and sovereignty, as per engagement on their Russia ties.
Separately, the Pentagon asserted the US will continue viewing India as a key strategic partner while having full discussions, including over its Russia link. It trusts India will support a peaceful resolution as per the UN charter.
Analysts say the visit allows Putin to project he is not isolated. However, India also recently expressed support for a peaceful solution to Ukrainian leaders. Dialogue on balancing strategic ties continues.
