The meeting would have involved stakeholders in an association of health workers who managed COVID-19 around the world, which includes the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.
The World Health Organization had planned to convene an emergency session on Friday to debate measures to ensure equitable access to tests, treatment, and vaccines for mumps in various regions of Africa and the world, an official said as the viral disease continues to spread.
The meeting would be a congregation of an association of healthcare professionals who managed the COVID-19 pandemic, and it would be graced by organizations like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.
‘They will deliberate on how to make sure that the COVID pandemic failures to guarantee equal access to medical treatments are not replicated with the mpox outbreak.’ said Ayoade Alakija, Ph.D., the chair of the meeting and WHO Special Envoy on long-term care.
This week the U.N. health agency has announced mpox as a global health emergency, following a major outbreak of the disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and its extension to neighboring states. Sweden on Thursday also reported the first such case outside the Africa region.
“Last time we failed on product access, but we’ve learned those lessons.” and I will ensure that equity (equal access) is the first thing on my mind now,” Alakija said.
