Who will challenge Liverpool this season?

The Reds, who were in their inaugural season under new manager Arne Slot, secured the Premier League title with four matches remaining – leaving them 10 points ahead of second-placed Arsenal.

Slot’s team have made £269m worth of signings this summer alone, which included a club-record £100m for Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz, and could climb to £116m. Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike (first £69m), Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez (£40m), and Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong (£29.5m) are their other big incomings, with Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili arriving in a £25m deal agreed last summer.

But several of their title challengers have made big signings themselves this summer. BBC Sport considers what each of last season’s top five have done this summer in terms of recruitment and whether anyone can catch Liverpool.

Selected arrivals: Viktor Gyokeres (Sporting), Martin Zubimendi (Real Sociedad), Noni Madueke and Kepa Arrizabalaga (Chelsea), Christian Norgaard (Brentford), Cristhian Mosquera (Valencia). Selected departures: Kieran Tierney, Jorginho, Thomas Partey, Takehiro Tomiyasu (all released)

BBC Sport correspondent Alex Howell: “This is a big season for Arsenal, and no one at the club is afraid to say so. The players, manager and even the kit launch have all nodded towards the ‘reach new heights’ slogan – or variation on it – as they seek to win a trophy for the first time since 2020.”.

“The Gunners have spent more than £190m on up-front fees as they seek to revamp the squad and recruit fresh faces, not least the highly awaited signing of Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting.”.

“Mikel Arteta has done a great job in turning Arsenal into repeat challengers in the league and has introduced consistent Champions League football. Now it is their time to progress further. It will be a pressured campaign after being so close for so many seasons now.”.

“Arteta appears to have changed how Arsenal are playing, as well. In pre-season, the Gunners have moved the ball through the lines more quickly, attempting to move the ball forward into spaces in which they can create and score opportunities. All of this has been done to complement Gyokeres’ style of play and, while it might take time, if it works, Arsenal are going to get very close again.”
