World Jewish congress head supports mediation for Gaza hostage release, stresses regional stability

WJC head backs mediation efforts for Gaza captive release deal.

The President of the World Jewish Congress (WJC) has voiced support for ongoing mediation to secure the release of remaining captives in Gaza.

In a statement, Ronald Lauder commended Qatar and Egypt for their role alongside the US in negotiations to free 105 people already. He said such efforts were crucial for regional stability, crediting Qatari leadership’s dedication.

The statement comes ahead of a UN General Assembly meeting on Tuesday, as mediation continues for a ceasefire to end the conflict in which over 1,100 lives have been lost since last October.

Reports indicate the White House is readying a new ceasefire proposal. Israeli PM Netanyahu has demanded retaining military control over Philadelphi and Netzarim corridor areas of Gaza, seen as an obstacle to agreement.

His stance has hardened despite massive Israeli protests calling for a deal, with police estimating 750,000 participated over the weekend. Tensions remain high as six other captives were recently found dead in southern Gaza.

As talks proceed under the watch of international actors, securing the release of remaining Gaza captives assumes significance for permanently ending hostilities.
