Seema Misra, a former sub-postmistress in England, has rejected the apology of a former Fujitsu engineer whose evidence had helped convict her over a decade ago for allegedly stealing £75,000 from her Post Office branch. Misra’s conviction was quashed in 2021 after the Court of Appeal ruled that she had been wrongly imprisoned.
At the ongoing public inquiry, Misra, now 47, said that the apology of Gareth Jenkins was “too little, too late”. Misra, who was 8 weeks pregnant at the time of her conviction, said, “Nobody can understand it” when referring to the ordeal she went through.
The UK government has paid millions in compensation to hundreds of sub-postmasters, many of them of Indian heritage, impacted by the faulty Horizon IT system developed by Fujitsu. Misra, who was sent to prison and gave birth to her second son while wearing an electronic tag, has expressed anger at being used as a “test case” for the system.
The ongoing public inquiry is expected to conclude in July, with the government recently introducing a law to quash convictions brought about by erroneous Horizon evidence.
