Zelensky clashes with senator Graham amid tense U.S. meeting

Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky firmly fired back at U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham’s suggestion that he leave office, issuing a defiant challenge. During a press conference, Zelensky responded that if Graham wished his opinion to matter, he could relocate to Ukraine and become a citizen. “I can award him Ukrainian citizenship,” Zelensky said, implying that as a citizen, Graham would have more voice in discussions about presidential leadership.

Graham, a long-time outspoken critic of Ukraine’s adversaries, has in recent times also been critical of Zelensky, demanding that there would have to be elections if anyone in Ukraine is to have a say. This bitter sparring followed an explosive Oval Office meeting between Zelensky, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Vice President JD Vance. Zelensky tried to harden U.S. support for Ukraine as fighting continues to scorch the land, but soon the conversation grew contentious.

During the meeting, Trump put Zelensky on notice with potential territorial sacrifices to Russia, and Vance rebuked the president of Ukraine for ingratitude about U.S. assistance. In rebuttal to Vance’s rebuke, Zelensky inquired about the competence of U.S. diplomacy based on Ukraine’s experience with failed talks with Russia before the escalation of conflict. The tension reached its climax when Trump blamed Zelensky for “gambling with World War III.”

As Zelensky described the danger of Russian aggression, he warned that the threats would eventually find their way to the U.S. “You have a good ocean and don’t feel it now, but you will feel it in the future,” he said to Trump, a comment said to infuriate Trump, leading to the abrupt ending of the meeting and the cancellation of a planned joint press conference.

Later in an interview, Zelensky reaffirmed the dramatic nature of the Oval Office meeting but defended his methods as being in the interests of Ukraine.

Later, Graham did not hesitate to denounce, stating that Zelensky needed to resign or change his strategy. He termed the meeting as a “complete and utter disaster,” suggesting that Zelensky’s leadership was becoming a barrier to fruitful U.S.-Ukraine relations. Just hours earlier than the Oval Office meeting, Graham cautioned Zelensky against engaging in heated exchanges on security pacts, which proved to be a sage suggestion in light of how fierce the diplomatic battle that unfolded was.
