Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday suggested exchanging all prisoners of war with Russia in an attempt to bring the current war between the two countries to an end, news agency AFP reported.
“Russia should let Ukrainians go. Ukraine is prepared to exchange everyone for everyone, and this is a reasonable solution,” Zelensky stated, speaking at a summit in Kyiv on the third anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Russia and Ukraine in October 2024 swapped 95 prisoners of war with each other through the mediation of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), reports said. Dmytro Lubinets, commissioner for human rights at the Ukrainian parliament, stated that it was the 58th time that the two nations had exchanged prisoners since fighting started in 2022.
Earlier, both nations had freed 103 prisoners from either side in September. Meanwhile, earlier today, Zelenskyy declared Ukraine’s “three years of resistance” and “heroism.” This follows a day after Zelenskyy proclaimed that he was willing to resign “immediately” as the Ukrainian President if his country would be offered Nato membership.
Addressing a presser in Kyiv, Zelenskyy stated, “If there is peace for Ukraine, if you need me to vacate my position, I am ready. I can trade it for Nato.” Zelenskyy had also called on US President Donald Trump to extend “security guarantees” against Russian aggression. On the eve of the third anniversary of the war, Zelenskyy stated that he was negotiating with the US President regarding the provision of crucial natural resources in return for security support.
Trump’s and Zelenskyy’s relations have remained icy in recent times, with Trump labelling his Ukrainian counterpart as a dictator and asking Ukraine to stage new elections. Trump has in turn been accused by Zelenskyy of swallowing Russian propaganda.
