The United Kingdom and Ukraine inked a three-billion-euro ($3.1 billion) loan agreement to bolster Kyiv’s defence capacities, a day after the country’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s fiery exchange with US President Donald Trump in the White House.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer greeted Zelenskyy with handshakes and “warm” hugs at Downing Street on Saturday. Zelenskyy landed at London Stansted Airport on Saturday following a shouting spat with the US President in Washington on Friday.
Zelenskyy and team Ukraine were commanded to vacate the White House after their meeting with Trump broke down when JD Vance accused him of having “disrespected” the US. Fans welcomed Zelenskyy’s motorcade into Downing Street, where he was greeted by Starmer. Both the leaders posed for a photo opportunity before going inside the UK Prime Minister’s residence.
Starmer and Zelenskyy’s summit preceded a broader summit of European leaders on Sunday, which Downing Street claimed would concentrate on strengthening support for “securing a just and lasting peace” in Ukraine.
In the meeting, Starmer informed Volodymyr Zelenskyy that Ukraine enjoys Britain’s “full backing”. The remark appeared timely amid ongoing doubt over US support after yesterday’s confrontation. You have full backing right throughout the United Kingdom and we have full backing for Ukraine for as long as it takes,” Keir stated.
The Prime Minister continued to add that the chants of support from the crowds gathered outside Downing Street demonstrate the people of Britain’s “unwavering determination” to stand with Ukraine and uphold its sovereignty.
Zelenskyy also expressed appreciation for Britain’s support right from the start and was optimistic for a summit with European leaders tomorrow to be hosted in London. Very pleased in the UK,” the Ukranian President stated, continuing, “We’re pleased and look to your support.”
“During our conversations, we had talked about the challenges of Ukraine and entire Europe today, coordination with allies, concrete actions to consolidate Ukraine’s positions and finish the war with a fair peace, and effective security guarantees,” said Zelenskyy in an X post.
